Richard Mead

Senior Associate Solicitor - Head of Wills, Trust and Probate (Thames Valley)

What's your role?

I primarily deal with estate planning.  I advise clients on passing their wealth to the beneficiaries of their choice while at the same time minimising tax and reducing exposure to other liabilities such as care fees.

Much of my work involves advising on and preparing wills.  This includes consideration of related issues, for example writing life policies in trust to reduce Inheritance Tax.  I encourage clients to set up Lasting Powers of of Attorney when they are making or updating their wills.

I also advise on lifetime gifts. This sometimes involves setting up appropriate trust structures to ensure that assets are transferred as tax efficiently as possible, while securing those assets for future generations.

One of my particular specialisms is dealing with the administration, restructuring and dissolution of trusts established by will and during lifetime.

I deal with the administration of estates (probate).  These often involve a trust or complex assets such as agricultural property or an interest in a business when the availability of Inheritance Tax reliefs need to be carefully considered.

Your experience

Since qualifying as a solicitor in 1987 I have specialised exclusively in wills, trusts and tax planning work.  I have acted for some of my clients for 30 years.

I have experience of working with a wide variety of clients. In a typical day I might be advising a landowner who wants to preserve the family estate for successive generations whilst advising another client on how best to make provision by will for his/her disabled child.

I have built up a large network of professional contacts and enjoy working jointly with clients, their accountant and financial adviser to achieve the best outcome in relation to estate planning work.
