Senior Associate Solicitor - Commercial Services

What’s your role?

I’m a Senior Associate Solicitor within the Commercial Services team, working alongside Mark O’Halloran to support SME’s and Enterprise clients achieve business objectives.

We deal with a wide variety of commercial matters from drafting and advising on standard terms (business to business and business to consumer) to bespoke contracts for new ventures/new business structures. We’re also approached to advise organisations on complex legal issues to help shape business strategy, such as data protection, intellectual property, commercial agency and distribution.

Having worked in-house for 5 years in a regulated organisation prior to Coffin Mew LLP, I understand first hand the vital role legal advisors can play in supporting and generating business solutions to achieve business growth. In Commercial Services, we appreciate that the right solution requires the legal and regulatory aspects of a matter to be aligned with the commercial objective.

Throughout my career I have worked closely alongside senior executive management and in-house counsel.  As a result, I recognise that the presentation of legal advice is just as important as the message within it, to support internal operations and decision making. I understand that a response in real time is critical to keep pace with project deliverables.

Your experience?

My commercial experience began during my training contract when I was seconded to an in-house team within the insurance sector. Soon after qualification, I was offered a permanent position within the same organisation and remained there for 5 years before joining Coffin Mew LLP.

Working in-house for that time was an invaluable experience and I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to support both the wholesale and retail divisions of the organisation, obtaining a well rounded insight into the operations of an insurance company.  I was tasked to draft, advise on, and negotiate, a wide range of commercial contracts. Particular highlights included advising on a multi-million/multi-year affinity insurance agreement, affiliate licence agreements, panel and ancillary product provider agreements, bespoke IT licences and numerous terms of business agreements.

I also worked closely alongside the in-house compliance teams to support business operations deal with regulatory change, including data governance, complaints handling and information security.

Three things we didn’t know about you?

  1. I have an unhealthy obsession with usual shoes and collect a particular brand (founded in 1999 as rather “irregular”)!
  2. I love musical theatre, from West End shows to local amateur dramatic performances.
  3. I’m a member of the Harrison School Association, a charity which helps raise funds for Harrison Primary School in Fareham. All money collected goes back into the school to enhance the learning experience.
