Chairman & Partner - Head of Commercial Property
What's your role?
As Chairman, I spend much of my time engaging with clients and others in our markets, exploring opportunities for us to work together and to contribute to our communities. In this context, I work closely with our investors and Management Board to develop our overall strategy and then with our legal and operations teams to deliver their respective business plans.
As Head of Commercial Property, I manage teams across our office network, advising clients on property finance, investment, development, and landlord and tenant; and, as the Real Estate Sector lead, I facilitate the full range of legal services we provide to our Real Estate clients.
As a Commercial Property Solicitor, I mainly focus on providing high level, strategic advice to clients on their property projects and portfolios.
I joined Coffin Mew LLP as a Partner in 2014, the firm’s Management Board in 2016 and became Chairman in 2018. I led the launch of our Brighton Office in 2015 and have been involved in the firm’s merger and acquisitions since then.
I was previously a Partner and Head of Real Estate Development at a Top 100 UK law firm, having started my career as a legal consultant on projects for NGOs, Government agencies and EU institutions, before joining an international “magic circle” City law firm. I have also sat on the Management Board of a Housing Association.
My particular real estate experience is in commercial and mixed use development schemes for clients in the private and public sectors, advising on development, option, funding and infrastructure agreements; related freehold and leasehold acquisitions and disposals; and related issues, such as restrictive covenants, easements, ransom strips and overage/clawback.
- Helping real estate, legal services and other businesses to grow and be successful
- Developing strong business relationships with clients and other contacts
- Managing and mentoring legal services and related operations teams
- Delivering clients’ commercial objectives through property and other legal services
Which five words best describe you?
Three things we didn't know about you
- A back injury ended a promising career as a competitive gymnast.
- I worked as an interpreter at a G7 Summit.
- My cat was filmed for a TV commercial.
The West Pier Trust has been a client of Nick Leavey’s for the best part of a decade. He has seen through a complicated and at times frustrating deal on our behalf. The service he consistently provided was meticulous, wise and calm and led us to achieving an agreement which the Trust is very happy with. His reliable, sound advice supported us through some difficult negotiations. His knowledge of the law, perspective and reliability meant that the Trust could be absolutely confident that it was in completely safe hands. We look forward to a continuing relationship in the knowledge that he has a thorough understanding of the Trust’s complicated status and aims and will always support us to the best possible.
