Southern Powerhouse: The Wilky Group
Coffin Mew commissioned a major report to look at the challenges and opportunities facing the South as a region in establishing itself as, what could be described as, the Southern Powerhouse.
The report consists of several interviews with key people in the region – from chief executives of property development companies, property investors as well as those heading up the Local Enterprise Partnerships.
Over the past couple of years, the pandemic has brought to the fore the differences in approach taken by the devolved administrations and their impacts on different parts of the country. In this article, Malcolm Wilky, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Wilky Group, which has been involved in property development for over 50 years, argues that the South needs to build on local enterprise partnerships and to develop bodies similar to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the Oxford to Cambridge Arc initiative and to take advantage of City Deals and the like to drive the region’s future economic performance.
