Equality & diversity training vital as compensation for successful discrimination claims has now increased

Posted on: May 5th, 2022

How long has it been since you provided training to your staff on equality and diversity? If it has been a while, then you need to act.

Injury to feelings awards can be made in successful discrimination claims, and with compensation bands, known as ‘Vento bands’, increasing, it has never been more important to review your training practices and update your training where necessary.

Employers can be held liable for acts of discrimination by staff members, even where the employer was unaware of the act and/or would not have approved the act.

There is a potential defence available to employers if they can demonstrate that they took ‘all reasonable steps’ to prevent such discrimination.

To meet this ‘reasonable steps’ test, employers should ensure they have a good programme of relevant, clear and regular training in place.

To help employers meet this need, we have developed a ready-made training package to help you deliver high quality equality and diversity training quickly, effectively and conveniently.

The training includes the following topics:

  • Unconscious bias
  • The meaning of equality and the 9 protected characteristics
  • Examples of how discrimination can occur
  • Harassment and how to create a tolerant and respectful workplace
  • Gender identity and emerging issues
  • The importance of reporting poor behaviour

The training will be provided as follows:

  • You will receive a 25-minute pre-recorded training video;
  • The recording can be watched at your employee’s convenience, and can also be used for new starters who start later on;
  • You will also receive a quiz to test employees to ensure they have attended and understood the session which can be kept on their personnel files.
