Training Contracts

As a Trainee Solicitor, you will rotate seats every six months and have exposure to both contentious and non-contentious work, so that you are able to get as much experience as possible across a range of legal disciplines. From day one you will be given significant client responsibility with hands-on client contact across a number of sectors and will be welcomed into one of our dynamic teams who will encourage and support your success.

We welcome applications from all graduates including those that have not studied a law degree. If successful, you will be invited to participate in our Assessment Centre, where you will complete a number of exercises throughout the day so we can learn more about you and your strengths and so you can learn more about Coffin Mew.

Our training programme is managed by Miles Brown who is assisted by our Employee Mentoring Scheme and the HR Team, who work together to provide a collaborative and supportive environment for all our Trainees.

CILEx opportunities

The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) offer an alternative route to qualifying as a lawyer. We welcome ambitious and driven individuals, whether you are looking to kick-start your legal career or already have a law degree (or equivalent qualification). This route typically takes five to seven years to complete if you have no existing legal qualifications. Training can be done at either a CILEx accredited centre or by distance learning.

Qualifying via the CILEx route allows you to earn as you learn, and gain vital practical experience alongside your studies. Chartered Legal Executives can go on to become Advocates, Partners in law firms and Judges, so there is no limit to what you can achieve. More information can be found at

I joined Coffin Mew straight after finishing my degree at Portsmouth University, and had incorporated my level 6 CILEx exams into the final year of my degree. During my six years at Coffin Mew, I have worked my way up from a file opening clerk to a senior conveyancer overseeing the New Homes team. I enjoyed the CILEx modules as this allowed me to apply the law I had learnt at university to real life scenarios, which I found helped me understand it better.
